Federal authorities have executed a significant operation in Houston, targeting a property linked to a sprawling $50 million forced labor and fraud scheme. This multi-state investigation has culminated in severe federal charges against two self-proclaimed religious leaders, exposing a dark underbelly of alleged exploitation and financial manipulation under the guise of religious ministry.

David Taylor, 53, and Michelle Brannon, 56, who headed the Kingdom of God Global Church (formerly Joshua Media Ministries International), were arrested in North Carolina and Florida, respectively. Their apprehension was part of a coordinated multi-state takedown, signaling the breadth and seriousness of the allegations spanning across Texas, Michigan, Florida, and Missouri.

The federal grand jury in the Eastern District of Michigan has returned a ten-count indictment, detailing a litany of egregious acts. Prosecutors accuse Taylor and Brannon of orchestrating a sophisticated system involving forced labor, extensive money laundering, and the coercion of tens of millions of dollars in donations from their followers. The scale of the alleged fraud highlights a deeply troubling abuse of trust.

Victims within the alleged human trafficking ring faced severe and systematic abuse designed to maintain control and ensure compliance. Punishments included public humiliation, forced repentance rituals, and severe restrictions on food and shelter. Such tactics demonstrate a calculated effort to strip individuals of their autonomy and basic human rights.

Beyond physical and social control, psychological abuse, sleep deprivation, and physical assaults were allegedly employed. Victims were also subjected to chilling threats of divine judgment, including warnings of sickness, accidents, or eternal damnation, should they disobey or fail to meet the demanding financial targets set by the leaders.

The swift action taken by law enforcement underscores the commitment to combating such grave offenses. Acting Special Agent in Charge Reuben Coleman of the FBI Detroit Field Office affirmed, “The indictment of David Taylor and Michelle Brannon demonstrates the FBI’s steadfast efforts to protect the American people from human exploitation and financial crimes.” This statement emphasizes the critical role of the FBI investigation in safeguarding vulnerable populations.

Further compounding the severity of the case, IRS investigators revealed that the alleged money laundering was not merely about illicit financial gains. It purportedly “funded an alleged human trafficking ring and supported a luxury lifestyle under the guise of a religious ministry,” painting a stark picture of leaders enriching themselves at the devastating expense of their followers.

Locally, the FBI confirmed its presence early Wednesday morning at a property owned by JMMI Global, a former hotel situated off the North Freeway in north Harris County. This Houston crime scene was identified as one of several ministry campuses tied to the organization, indicating the significant footprint of the alleged operation.

The unfolding events have drawn local attention, with witnesses such as Vincent Escobedo, an employee at a nearby commercial appliance parts store, confirming he observed part of the FBI raid Wednesday morning. The community watches as this complex case against the religious leaders proceeds, hoping for justice for the victims of alleged forced labor.
