He was a proud graduate of Shenandoah Catholic High School, where he laid the groundwork for a life of purpose and service.
A distinguished Vietnam Veteran, Michael J. Roland bravely served his nation in the U.S. Navy during the turbulent Vietnam War era. Aboard the USS Reeves, he exemplified courage and commitment, earning the Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Stars and the Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device for his valor. His service as a Navy Veteran was a testament to his patriotism.
Following his honorable discharge, Michael embarked on a diverse professional journey. Roland, and his wife Stephanie, of York, alongside his cherished grandchildren, Zoe and Graeme. His extensive family also includes his brother Patrick Roland (with wife Helene) and sister Sarah Quinlan (with husband Wallace), along with a large network of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by seven of his siblings, whose memories he held dear. He was famously known for always having a new collection of jokes for every family gathering, ensuring laughter and warmth.
Michael’s zest for life extended to his passions and simple pleasures. He was an ardent fan of Notre Dame football, never missing a game. He also enjoyed the finer things in life, particularly a tall pint of Guinness, a wee dram of Scotch or Jameson, and the comforting taste of mashed potatoes with gravy, which were often shared during lively family moments.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, 309 South George Street, York, with The Rev. John Kuchinski officiating. His final resting place will be Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, where he will receive full military honors on Thursday, October 2, 2025, at 10:00 AM.
