Korea’s summers bring intense heat and rain, driving tourists to seek cool, beautiful escapes. Okcheon County, in North Chungcheong Province, has emerged as a premier destination, promising unforgettable experiences with its captivating forest caverns and vibrant hillside gardens. This region uniquely blends natural wonder with historical intrigue, making it an ideal South Korea travel choice.

At the heart of this allure lies Jangryeongsan Nature Recreation Forest, home to a remarkable “forest cave.” This innovative attraction, once the Dongguk Mine, a significant iron ore supplier, lay abandoned for over five decades before a government initiative transformed its tunnels into a captivating tourist site, blending industrial history with natural beauty.

The converted mine stretches approximately 100 meters, offering a brief yet immersive journey into the lives of past miners through creative historical displays. The cave’s atmosphere is dramatically enhanced by dynamic, colorful lighting, creating a mystical and otherworldly ambiance that has garnered significant attention, particularly on social media platforms, substantially boosting visitor numbers.

Inside, the cave reveals astonishing artistic installations. One path leads to a unique photo spot adorned with glowing artificial wisteria vines, providing a perfect backdrop. Further along, visitors encounter the “Aurora Cave,” a chamber bathed in blue light with a sculpted moon and stars, simulating a night sky, complemented by wave-like lighting resembling nebulae or the Northern Lights. A “wishing rock” also offers a nod to historical figures like Cho Heon.

Just 25 kilometers from this forest sanctuary, Cheonsang Garden offers another breathtaking experience. Recognized by the Korea Forest Service as one of the “30 most beautiful private gardens,” this “heavenly garden” spans 60,000 square meters against the scenic backdrop of Daecheong Lake, inviting visitors since 2009 to a blend of natural splendor and artistic design.

The garden boasts over 500 plant species, complemented by striking stone arrangements and structures reminiscent of European castles. The thoughtful design encourages a leisurely pace, with signs like “Do not walk faster than the wind,” fostering a deep connection with the environment, a philosophy championed by its founder, environmental activist Ju Seo-taek.

Among Cheonsang Garden’s most celebrated features are its spectacular hydrangea gardens, which reach their peak bloom during the summer months. Okcheon County is renowned as a top spot for hydrangeas in South Korea, proudly hosting the nation’s largest hydrangea seedling production area, supplying 70% of the country’s demand.

From July through August, thousands of white Limelight panicle hydrangeas transform the garden, filling the air with delicate fragrances. Visitors can explore circular trails or ascend to the central observatory for panoramic views of these cotton-candy-like blossoms, making it a highly sought-after summer getaway destination. This commitment to natural beauty underscores Okcheon’s embrace of eco-tourism Korea.

Beyond its forest caves and stunning floral displays, Okcheon County presents a unique intersection of nature, history, and sustainable practices. It offers a much-needed escape from daily life, whether for adventurers, nature enthusiasts, or those seeking a peaceful retreat. Okcheon promises an unforgettable Korean tourism experience, setting a standard for mindful travel.
