Each week, the athletic prowess across the Lone Star State shines brightly, and it is our privilege to highlight the exceptional achievements of Texas high school athletes. This engaging poll serves as a vibrant platform for fans to celebrate and support the dedication and talent displayed in fall sports, excluding football which will feature in its own dedicated survey this year.
Our focus this week turns to the standout performances from August 18-23 across UIL and TAPPS competitions, encompassing thrilling volleyball matches, intense water polo contests, and grueling cross country races. The depth of talent in these diverse athletic fields ensures a captivating selection of nominees.
Among the top contenders is a remarkable 6-foot-0 freshman volleyball player whose dominant presence on the court for the Mustangs left opponents reeling. Against Normangee, she delivered an astonishing 32 kills, contributed 17 service points, and secured 15 digs, showcasing an all-around mastery of the game. Throughout nine games last week, she consistently achieved 11 or more kills in eight of those appearances, cementing her status as a formidable force in high school volleyball.
Another impressive nominee is a senior goalkeeper who anchored her team, the Hawks, to a commendable 3-1 record over the past weekend. Her exceptional reflexes and strategic positioning resulted in a staggering 42 saves, complemented by 4 crucial assists. This demonstration of leadership and skill in the net was pivotal to her team’s defensive strength and overall success.
In the demanding world of cross country, a senior athlete from Edinburg High made a triumphant start to the 2025 season. At the Edinburg High Invitational on August 23, this runner demonstrated incredible endurance and speed, conquering the challenging course at Ebony Hills Golf Course with an impressive time of 15:20.8, setting an early benchmark for the season.
The intense sport of water polo saw a senior from the Mustangs deliver an astounding performance, netting two separate 6-goal games against formidable opponents Flower Mound (Aug. 22) and Denton Guyer (Aug. 23). The 6-foot-1 athlete amassed a remarkable total of 28 goals, 10 assists, and 16 steals over just six games last week, highlighting their offensive power and defensive contributions in Texas water polo.
