Blackpool is set to once again dazzle visitors with the highly anticipated 2025 Illuminations, unveiling a spectacular array of new, fun-packed features crafted through innovative collaborations with four nationally acclaimed artists. This iconic light festival continues its legacy of innovation, promising an unforgettable experience for UK tourism and families alike.
A major highlight revealed at the special preview event, held at Blackpool Council’s Lightworks facility, includes a breathtaking dragon installation on the Tower Festival Headland. Three majestic dragons, each towering seven metres tall and coiled around turrets, will mesmerize onlookers as they come alive with intricate lighting, smoke effects, and watchful eyes, creating a truly immersive art installation.
Adding an interactive dimension, artist Ant Dickinson has designed a new projection for The Blackpool Tower building. Visitors can engage with this display by scanning a QR code, allowing them to summon their chosen dragon and witness it soaring across the legendary landmark, further enhancing the Blackpool Illuminations experience.
Nature takes centre stage with Robert E. Fuller’s illuminated works, which beautifully capture the character of Britain’s fauna. His detailed wildlife portraits featuring badgers, foxes, pheasants, and various birdlife will bring the serene beauty of the natural world to the vibrant seaside spectacle, making it a unique element of the Blackpool 2025 showcase.
Artist Jason Wilsher-Mills contributes a deeply personal narrative with “LOVE,” a six-panel illuminated roadway section. Inspired by his cherished childhood memories of Blackpool in 1978, this piece thoughtfully tells the endearing story of two individuals, from their initial encounter on the beach to a lifetime of dancing in The Blackpool Tower Ballroom, resonating with family events and romance.
Wilsher-Mills’ work also includes twelve unique Everyman figures on vivid backdrops, continuing a global journey motif that symbolizes connection and shared human experience. Complementing these ground-level wonders, the “Space Canopy” will invite visitors to gaze upwards at an 11.2-metre-tall light installation, intricately woven with 350 metres of luminescent wire, adding another layer to the grandeur of the light festival.
Speaking at the preview, Cllr Lynn Williams, leader of Blackpool Council, emphasized the event’s commitment to innovation and creating “special moments of excitement and joy.” She proudly highlighted the fusion of talented, acclaimed artists like Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, Robert E. Fuller, and Jason Wilsher-Mills, whose collective passion for storytelling shapes the spectacular art installations on display.
The Illuminations, described as part of Blackpool’s everyday streetscape, are designed to evoke smiles and create lasting memories. Historically, this world-famous display has played a crucial role in reflecting Britain’s evolving culture and offering many their first glimpse into other cultures, underscoring its enduring significance beyond mere entertainment as a cornerstone of UK tourism.
These spectacular new features will be part of the Blackpool Illuminations 2025, shining nightly from Friday, August 29, until Sunday, January 4. This enduring family event promises to be a dazzling highlight, drawing visitors to witness one of the largest and longest-running light festivals globally.
