The Hopper’s 4-H Club recently convened for a dynamic session, highlighting a vibrant hub of youth development and community service within Garrett County. These regular gatherings are crucial for fostering leadership skills, promoting civic engagement, and strengthening the bonds that underpin rural community life, demonstrating the enduring impact of 4-H Club initiatives on young members.
The August 24th meeting, held at the Friendsville Senior Center, was formally initiated by President Bristal Ketterman, setting a tone of structured camaraderie. Following the customary opening, Jeremy Gordon proficiently led both the American and 4-H pledges, reinforcing the club’s foundational values of patriotism and dedication to its mission.
With a robust attendance of eleven dedicated members and ten supportive volunteering adults, the gathering underscored the strong community backing for the club’s activities. A highlight of the early proceedings was an engaging game titled ‘Rabbit Equipment Memory,’ skillfully led by Darlene Schmidt, which combined educational elements with interactive fun for all present.
Club business proceeded efficiently as Secretary Ava Cosner presented the minutes from the previous meeting, which were subsequently approved by the membership. This was followed by Treasurer Maddox Gordon’s comprehensive financial report, also receiving approval, showcasing the club’s commitment to transparent and responsible management.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to vibrant reports from recent events, with members and volunteering adults sharing their experiences and observations from the Garrett County Fair. Further enriching these discussions were the accounts from those who had the opportunity to represent the club at the prestigious Maryland State Fair, offering insights into larger agricultural showcases and competitive events.
Members received commendation for their unwavering dedication during the fair week, specifically for their crucial roles in promoting rabbits and poultry. Their efforts extended to the demanding tasks of cleaning cages, ensuring proper feeding and watering, and diligently gathering eggs, underscoring the practical agriculture education and responsibility inherent in 4-H participation. The smooth operation of the Rabbit and Poultry barn is a testament to the collective efforts of these hardworking members, volunteering adults, and dedicated superintendents, whose contributions are truly indispensable.
Looking ahead, members were reminded of ongoing responsibilities, including the meticulous completion of record books and Service Learning forms, vital components of their youth development journey. A critical deadline was also announced for the Diamond Clover records, due by the close of September, emphasizing accountability and long-term project planning within the 4-H Club framework.
Further good news included the successful acquisition of a “Lungs to Last a Lifetime” grant from the Garrett County Health Department, which facilitated the purchase of essential fans and lights for the barn, significantly improving conditions for livestock. The club also celebrated earning a second-place ribbon for their impressive Fair Booth, with heartfelt thanks extended to all who contributed to its creation, as well as those who helped with barn preparation and clean-up efforts.
The next general meeting is scheduled for September 20th at 4 p.m., taking place at the fairgrounds, promising another opportunity for continued engagement. This special gathering will feature a picnic, held in thoughtful remembrance of loved ones who have passed, reinforcing the club’s strong sense of community and mutual support. All interested individuals are warmly invited to “HOP HOP HOP on over for a fun time!” and experience firsthand the enriching environment of the Hopper’s 4-H Club.
