Sevier County has witnessed an extraordinary surge in visitor spending for 2024, solidifying its position as a formidable economic powerhouse within Tennessee and highlighting the robust growth of its tourism sector.

A recent report from Tourism Economics and the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development revealed a staggering $3,929,693,370 in visitor spending for the county, marking a significant 2.03 percent increase from the previous year. This consistent upward trend underscores the vital role that a vibrant hospitality industry plays in the region’s prosperity.

Sevier County Mayor Larry Waters attributed this remarkable economic growth to the collective dedication of local businesses, workers, and organizations that consistently create welcoming experiences for visitors. Their efforts are pivotal in fostering repeat visits and strengthening the county’s appeal.

The substantial visitor spending translated directly into significant tax benefits, generating over $251 million in state tax revenue and an additional $187 million in local tax revenue for Sevier County. Without this capital, each household in the county would face an estimated $11,191 increase in state and local taxes, illustrating the profound economic impact.

Ranking third among Tennessee’s 95 counties for tourist spending, Sevier County, home to popular destinations like Gatlinburg and the Smoky Mountains, continues to captivate guests with its unique blend of breathtaking natural beauty and quintessential local charm. Vice Mayor Bryan McCarter emphasized how tourism effectively showcases the county’s distinctiveness.

Mark Ezell, Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development, affirmed that these impressive figures are also a result of collaborative state initiatives. He highlighted a strategic approach to leveraging larger tourism budgets, contributing to over 36 percent growth in visitor spending statewide over the past six years and driving Tennessee Economy forward through non-resident tax revenue.

On a broader scale, Tennessee’s tourism sector has achieved record-breaking success for the fourth consecutive year in 2024, attracting 147 million visitors and generating $31.66 billion in direct visitor spending. With 74 out of 95 counties reporting increases, and new international travel options slated for Spring 2025, the future for Smoky Mountains Travel and the entire state’s tourism looks exceptionally promising.
