Horwich Harriers demonstrated their formidable prowess across various challenging terrains and distances last weekend, with athletes delivering outstanding performances that underscored the club’s deep talent pool and enduring competitive spirit. From the demanding inclines of fell races to the speed of track events and the endurance of road running, the Harriers left their mark, securing notable victories and personal bests that highlight their dedication and rigorous training.

The picturesque yet unforgiving landscape near Clitheroe set the stage for the Pendleton Fell Race, a short but brutally steep five-mile course featuring a daunting 1,500 feet of ascent. It was here that veteran runners Dan Gilbert and Danny Hope truly distinguished themselves, conquering the grueling climb to secure impressive fifth and sixth overall positions respectively, with Gilbert claiming the top V50 spot in 41 minutes and 23 seconds, and Hope dominating the V40 category in 43 minutes and 11 seconds.

Further showcasing the club’s widespread talent, Susanne Budgett continued her impressive return to competitive racing in the scenic Lake District. Her challenge came at the Keswick Show Barrow Fell Race, an arguably tougher event packing nearly 1,400 feet of ascent into a mere 6.5 kilometers. Budgett navigated the demanding course with remarkable resilience, completing it in a commendable 56 minutes and 19 seconds, demonstrating her formidable fitness and passion for the sport.

Budgett’s resurgence wasn’t confined to the fells; just days prior, she marked another significant milestone by tackling her first road race in 15 years. Competing in the flat Hoad Hill Harriers 10K, she showcased her versatility and sustained athleticism, proving that her return to racing is both comprehensive and highly successful across different disciplines, inspiring fellow athletes with her unwavering commitment.

The future of Horwich Harriers also shone brightly at Trafford, where a dedicated team of junior athletes delivered stellar performances. Among them, Lily Mort achieved a personal best in the 100m with a swift 14.03 seconds, while Amelia Green recorded a season’s best of 13.85 seconds over the same distance. Winnie Lancaster also celebrated a new personal best, clocking an impressive 2:30.81 in the 800m, with Louis Yates, Joel Ige, and Beatrice Green also competing with notable distinction, including Yates’s second-place finish in the 800m.

Meanwhile, on the opposite side of the Lake District near Keswick, Brendan Bolland and Oliver Hughes put forth strong efforts, completing their respective races in 26 minutes and 32 seconds, and 28 minutes and 36 seconds. Their performances underscore the club’s consistent presence and competitive spirit across numerous regional events, reflecting a widespread commitment to excellence.

The competitive action extended to Ormskirk, where the Middletons, Jason and Janet, demonstrated their racing acumen with times of 23 minutes and 48 seconds, and 31 minutes and 19 seconds respectively. Elsewhere, Harry Yates and Rob Jackson engaged in a spirited rivalry at Peel, with Yates ultimately securing a narrow five-second victory in 18 minutes and 21 seconds. Even the evergreen Tony Hesketh continued his impressive run, finishing in 28 minutes and 48 seconds, while Steve Jackson completed his race in 32 minutes and 57 seconds. These diverse results highlight the depth of talent within the Harriers and their continuous pursuit of personal and club success.
