UC Merced proudly welcomes Adriana Ponce Mata, a remarkable new Bobcat whose journey into higher education is underpinned by an already impressive resume in scientific research and a profound commitment to community betterment.

Adriana’s formative experiences include a transformative internship through Project SEED, a nationwide initiative by the American Chemical Society. This led her to the Chevron refinery in Richmond, where she spent two intensive summers gaining invaluable hands-on research skills by testing various fuels, including oil, diesel, gas, and jet fuel, for their viscosity levels.

This immersive nine-week program, operating full-time, not only provided her with critical technical expertise but also ignited a deeper passion for science and its potential to drive real change. Her exceptional contributions were recognized with the prestigious Mark Frishberg Award, a testament to her dedication and the quality of her research.

Beyond her scientific endeavors, Adriana exhibited strong leadership and a selfless spirit during her high school years. As an active member of ASB, she contributed to organizing campus events, and notably, co-founded a community service club. This club partnered with the Bay Area Rescue Mission, actively supporting their events, serving meals, and distributing essential clothing to those in need, showcasing her commitment to community outreach.

Her decision to join UC Merced was influenced by the campus’s serene environment and the warm, personable nature of its professors, whom she met during Bobcat Day. Adriana is eager to embrace this new chapter, viewing UC Merced as an ideal setting to foster independence and continue her academic and personal development.

Academically, Adriana plans to major in public health, driven by an inherent desire to help people. She sees her coursework as a pathway to explore diverse career avenues, with a keen interest in potentially focusing on biology or expanding her work in community outreach, aligning perfectly with her past experiences.

Looking ahead, Adriana is enthusiastic about leveraging the abundant research opportunities available at UC Merced. Additionally, she harbors an ambition to participate in the university’s study abroad program, envisioning it as a unique chance to broaden her global perspective and enrich her overall student experience.

Her aspirations are beautifully encapsulated by a quote from Ruth Bader Ginsburg: “Women belong in all places where decisions are being made,” reflecting Adriana’s own drive for impactful student leadership and her unwavering dedication to making a significant difference in the world.
