Diablo Team Unites: Microsoft Workers Form Union for Job Security

What’s brewing in the world of gaming? The Diablo team at Blizzard is making headlines, but it’s not about a new expansion. Workers are organizing for protection amidst broader changes in the tech giant. Is this the new standard for the industry?

A significant shift is underway within the massive gaming industry as Blizzard’s acclaimed Diablo team officially moves to form a union, marking a pivotal moment for worker representation within Microsoft’s expansive corporate structure. This decision underscores a growing trend of employees seeking greater protection and a stronger voice in their professional lives, particularly in the wake of widespread industry restructuring and layoffs.

The move saw an overwhelming majority, with over 450 dedicated developers casting their votes in favor of representation through the Communications Workers of America (CWA). This collective action by the Diablo team highlights a unified desire among gaming professionals to secure their futures and advocate for improved working conditions, setting a precedent for other studios and companies within the competitive digital entertainment landscape.

This critical development follows a period of heightened uncertainty across the tech and gaming sectors, characterized by significant job reductions that have left many employees feeling vulnerable. Workers are increasingly prioritizing fair compensation, robust job security measures, and tangible opportunities to enhance their day-to-day workplace environments, signaling a demand for more equitable practices from major corporations.

The Diablo team’s unionization is not an isolated incident but rather part of a broader, accelerating movement within Microsoft’s acquired entities. Notably, this follows similar successful organizing efforts by Blizzard’s story and franchise development team, alongside employees at ZeniMax Media and Raven Software. Collectively, these initiatives have brought over 3,500 Microsoft employees under the banner of CWA-organized unions, demonstrating considerable momentum.

Reflecting on the emotional toll of the current climate, Kelly Yeo, a game producer on Diablo and a key organizing committee member, shared her perspective: “With every subsequent round of mass layoffs, I’ve witnessed the dread in my coworkers grow stronger because it feels like no amount of hard work is enough to protect us.” Her statement powerfully conveys the deep-seated anxieties driving these organizational efforts, emphasizing the personal impact on individuals dedicated to their craft.

Yeo expressed profound optimism regarding the outcome: “I am overjoyed that we have formed a union – this is just the first step for us joining a movement spreading across an industry that is tired of living in fear. We are ready to begin fighting for real change alongside our Diablo colleagues.” This sentiment encapsulates the hope and determination fueling the burgeoning labor movement within the gaming industry, pointing towards a future where collective action ensures worker dignity and stability.

Echoing this sentiment, Jason Justice, president of CWA local 9510, observed, “Diablo workers are the latest to show that California has become a hub for video game worker organizing.” He further elaborated on the broader significance: “What’s happening here is part of a much larger story about turning the tide in an industry that has long overlooked its labour. Entertainment workers across film, television, music, and now video games are standing together to have a seat at the table.” This underscores the interconnectedness of labor movements across the wider entertainment sector, with video games now firmly establishing their place in this ongoing struggle for worker rights and recognition.
