Colorado’s Divisive Special Session: Lawmakers Clash Over Budget Shortfall

Democrats, led by figures such as Senate President James Coleman, firmly asserted the necessity of the special session, directly attributing the fiscal crisis to the federal H.R. 1 legislation which they claimed created the substantial state budget gap. Coleman emphasized that lawmakers “faced it head-on, rolled up our sleeves, and put families ahead of corporations,” suggesting a proactive and people-focused approach to a challenging financial predicament. They also raised concerns about proposals like selling tax credits for health insurance below their value, questioning the fiscal policy prudence of such actions and potential violations of the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TABOR).
