A cherished landmark pub in York, Gibsons, is poised for a grand re-opening this autumn, marking the end of a five-year closure and the completion of a significant £550,000 refurbishment project. This eagerly anticipated event will breathe new life into a historic establishment, set to once again welcome patrons to its revitalized premises.

The venerable three-storey building, located at 129 Micklegate, boasts a rich heritage dating back to 1861. Originally constructed as a private residence, it transformed into a public house four years later, initially known as The Bar Hotel before eventually adopting the familiar name of Gibsons. Its Grade II-listed status underscores its architectural and historical significance within the city of York.

Gibsons previously closed its doors on New Year’s Eve 2019, when long-standing owners Jon Bon Gibson and Lee Wilkson decided to retire after nearly a decade at the helm. The departure of these popular figures left a void in York’s vibrant pub scene, leaving many to wonder about the future of this iconic venue.

Taking the reins of this exciting venture is Robin, a seasoned professional with extensive experience in the hospitality sector. His career spans many years, commencing during his university days and progressing through various roles in student and city centre cocktail bars in Cardiff, before moving north to manage local pubs and wine bars.

Robin expresses profound enthusiasm for his new role, stating his keen anticipation of running Gibsons and integrating into the welcoming York community. He considers himself exceptionally fortunate to be in York, a city he has admired since childhood, having been raised outside Durham and frequently visiting the historic city every summer.

His vision for the revitalized Gibsons is to transform it into a thriving community hub, catering to a diverse clientele including local workers, long-term residents, the student population, and the countless tourists who flock to York. The refurbishment is meticulously designed to create an inclusive and inviting atmosphere for all.

Matt Williams, a business development manager for Star Pubs, shared the company’s delight in reopening Gibsons, emphasizing its status as a local landmark. He noted that this extensive project is part of a broader £40 million investment by HEINEKEN UK this year, dedicated to upgrading and reopening pubs across the nation, underscoring a commitment to the hospitality industry.

Adding to its unique charm, Gibsons proudly features a rare amenity for a city centre establishment: a beautiful, secluded courtyard garden. This hidden gem, visible from the historic York wall, offers a perfect retreat for guests to enjoy during warmer days and evenings, promising a tranquil escape amidst the bustling city.
