Scotland’s First Minister, John Swinney, has directly confronted tech billionaire Elon Musk, accusing him of disseminating ‘misinformation’ following a deeply concerning incident in Dundee that has ignited widespread public debate.

The controversy stems from an incident where a young girl was charged in connection with the alleged possession of offensive weapons in Dundee, an event that subsequently garnered significant attention across social media platforms.

Footage related to the incident, purportedly showing a young girl brandishing weapons, circulated widely, with posts on X (formerly Twitter) making unsubstantiated claims, some of which were amplified by its owner, Elon Musk.

Mr. Musk, known for his prolific presence on social media, shared several posts that included assertions about the incident, notably touching upon the migrant status of those allegedly involved, sparking fierce criticism from Scottish authorities.

In response, First Minister Swinney unequivocally stated that such actions by influential figures like Musk are “totally and utterly unacceptable,” warning against deliberate misinformation designed to sow fear and disrupt the social fabric of communities.

Police Scotland has also issued a stark warning, highlighting the prevalence of “deliberate misinformation” being shared online and urging the public to refrain from speculation, emphasizing the importance of community cohesion during ongoing investigations.

Authorities confirmed that a 12-year-old girl has been charged in connection with offensive weapons and will be referred to relevant bodies, while inquiries into the full circumstances of the Saturday evening incident in St Ann Lane continue.

This is not the first time Elon Musk has drawn the ire of Scottish political leaders, having previously been accused of attempting to “inflame racial tensions” by a former First Minister, underscoring a recurring pattern of online contention.

The incident in Dundee serves as a critical reminder of the profound impact social media can have on public perception and the imperative for responsible engagement, particularly when sensitive information and community welfare are at stake.
