The recent “Route 61 Classic” at Martz Hall witnessed a compelling display of skill and determination as the Pottsville High School volleyball team secured a dominant early-season victory over perennial rivals, the Blue Mountain Eagles. This crucial volleyball match, held on Thursday, August 28, 2025, showcased Pottsville’s formidable talent, as they ultimately triumphed in three decisive sets, setting a strong precedent for their PA scholastic sports campaign.

The opening set proved to be a nail-biter, with the Blue Mountain Eagles pushing the Crimson Tide to their limits. Despite the Eagles’ spirited challenge, bringing the score to a close 26-24, Pottsville’s resilience and strategic plays allowed them to narrowly secure the initial advantage. This early test underlined the competitive nature of High School Volleyball in the region and offered a glimpse into the intensity of this rivalry.

They dominated the second set with a score of 25-18, followed by an equally commanding 25-17 performance in the third. Junior Olivia Pacovsky was instrumental with her powerful hits, while Anna Burke and Megan Yost made significant contributions, including crucial blocks at the net. Junior Anna Burke reflected on the win, stating, “It’s a really good confidence booster for us and it shows us how we can win big games like that because Blue Mountain played well.” Coach Sherakas added, “We wanted to stay in system so we could keep our offense running so we wanted to keep them out of their system,” indicating a well-thought-out tactical approach. The effective serving and strong net play were pivotal in securing the win in this significant volleyball match.

Statistically, Megan Yost led Pottsville with an impressive 17 digs and 34 assists, while Maggie Brennan contributed nine kills and five blocks. Rhyan Brennan added eight digs, one ace, six kills, and five blocks. For Blue Mountain, Tess Keanu recorded 21 digs, Zoe Leibensperger had eight kills, and Bella Grasso amassed 25 assists. Looking ahead, Pottsville is set to face Our Lady Lourdes Regional, while the Blue Mountain Eagles will host Tamaqua, continuing their demanding High School Volleyball schedules.
