Parsons Trade: Could Prescott Be Stafford’s Successor for the Rams?

Did the Micah Parsons trade just open up a wild new chapter for Dak Prescott and the Rams? Imagine Prescott under Sean McVay, slinging passes to Puka Nacua! While the idea sounds like a dream scenario for LA, the cold, hard NFL salary cap often has other plans. Could this blockbuster theory ever become a reality?

The NFL world was rocked by the surprising Thursday trade of Micah Parsons from the Dallas Cowboys to the Green Bay Packers, a move that sent shockwaves through the league and immediately sparked intense debate about the Cowboys’ long-term strategy and future direction.

This blockbuster trade, which saw Dallas acquire significant draft capital, immediately fueled speculation that the Cowboys are on the cusp of a major roster overhaul, potentially signaling a full-scale rebuild despite any public denials. Such a scenario would inevitably bring the future of quarterback Dak Prescott into sharp focus.

Coincidentally, the Los Angeles Rams are facing their own looming quarterback question as Matthew Stafford approaches the twilight of his career. With the 2025 season increasingly looking like Stafford’s last stand in Los Angeles, the Rams are on the hunt for a long-term successor, armed with a strong collection of draft picks, including a crucial first-rounder in 2026.

This convergence of timelines—the Cowboys potentially looking to move on from Prescott and the Rams seeking a new franchise signal-caller—has led to an intriguing, albeit hypothetical, theory: could Dak Prescott become Matthew Stafford’s successor in Hollywood?

However, the tantalizing prospect quickly dissolves under the harsh light of NFL salary cap realities. For the Dallas Cowboys, moving on from Dak Prescott presents an almost insurmountable financial obstacle. Prescott is guaranteed $40 million next year, and a pre-June 1st trade would incur a staggering $90 million dead cap hit, while a cut would result in $130 million in dead money. Even a post-June 1st move would still leave Dallas with a significant $34 million dead cap charge from a trade or $74 million from a cut, severely hamstringing their operational flexibility.

The Los Angeles Rams face an equally daunting financial predicament with Matthew Stafford’s contract. If Stafford were to retire at the end of the 2025 season, the Rams would still be saddled with a substantial $27.4 million dead cap hit in 2026, followed by another $14.4 million in 2027. Furthermore, a $40 million salary guarantee in Stafford’s contract vests on the fifth day of the 2026 league year, making any pre-existing plans incredibly time-sensitive and financially challenging.

While the idea of Dak Prescott finding a new home with the Los Angeles Rams, benefitting from Sean McVay’s coaching and an array of offensive weapons like Puka Nacua, Davante Adams, and Terrance Ferguson, is undeniably appealing, the financial implications render it largely theoretical. Such a move could offer Prescott a fresh start and a less burdensome role than he has carried in Dallas.

Ultimately, this exciting quarterback swap is likely to remain confined to the realm of speculation for the foreseeable future. Neither the Dallas Cowboys nor the Los Angeles Rams can financially accommodate such a significant transaction until at least the 2027 season, by which time the landscape of NFL quarterbacks and team needs will undoubtedly have shifted dramatically.
