As the highly anticipated volleyball season approaches, two formidable teams, Fort Hill and Northern, are already dominating headlines, establishing themselves as the early favorites in the area’s competitive athletic landscape. Their consistent performance and strong rosters position them at the forefront of the preseason discussions, promising an exciting and hard-fought season ahead for fans of team sports.

The preseason poll results have set a clear, albeit narrow, hierarchy for the upcoming volleyball season. Fort Hill, demonstrating significant strength, secured the top spot with three crucial first-place votes and a total of 23 points. Hot on their heels, Northern garnered two first-place votes, accumulating 18 points, indicating a tightly contested race for dominance. Other notable teams in the rankings include Frankfort with 15 points, Mountain Ridge with 12 points, and Hampshire with four points, all vying for a strong finish in the league.

Northern, boasting an impressive 13-3 record from the previous season, returns with a significant advantage: WestMAC Player of the Year, Demi Ross. Her exceptional talent and leadership are pivotal to the team’s strategy, underscoring their commitment to continued player development. The team aims to build upon their past successes, utilizing their experienced core to make a profound impact in every athletic competition they face this year.

Fort Hill, with a strong 14-4 record from the last season, enters the new campaign with high aspirations. Their coach emphasizes the importance of sustained growth and surpassing previous achievements, including a deeper run in the playoffs. Despite a relatively young team, there is immense confidence in their collective ability to achieve great things, a testament to effective coaching strategies and a robust team spirit.

Adding an intriguing dynamic to the league is the inaugural season of Messiah Christian Academy, a new private school based in Fort Ashby, West Virginia. Serving students from Mineral, Hampshire, and Allegany counties, Messiah introduces a fresh wave of talent and a visionary approach to new school athletics. This venture is spearheaded by Administrator Dan Thompson, who brings extensive experience, and volleyball legend John Wall, signaling a serious contender in the making.

Coach John Wall arrives at Messiah Christian Academy with an illustrious background, having engineered a volleyball dynasty at Calvary Christian Academy. His previous tenure saw his teams achieve an astonishing 82 consecutive home game victories and a remarkable 50-game winning streak overall, including an undefeated 36-0 season in 2022 that culminated in a National Christian School Athletic Association tournament championship. This legacy of excellence sets exceptionally high expectations for his new program.

The Messiah Warriors, led by seniors Kaitlyn Bender and Jenna Bender, will navigate their freshman-dominated roster through an 18-game schedule with determination. Their coach articulates a vision for a “new culture of volleyball excellence,” highlighting the team’s guts and unwavering determination to fight for every point. Despite being young and not particularly large, their spirit and high expectations are set to make their inaugural season a winning season in the realm of team sports.

Meanwhile, the Southern Garrett Rams are poised for a confident start, supported by seven returning players and a robust senior class. The significant growth and effort demonstrated during the offseason reflect the immense potential within this team. Their coach views this season as a crucial intersection where preparation meets opportunity, signaling their readiness to rise together and achieve great things in the upcoming athletic competition.
