A gripping new National Geographic documentary, “Lost in the Jungle,” is set to captivate audiences with the extraordinary true story of four young Indigenous siblings who defied unimaginable odds, surviving 40 harrowing days alone in the vast and unforgiving Colombian rainforest after a devastating plane crash.

The ordeal began on May 1, 2023, when a small aircraft carrying the children—aged 13, 9, 5, and an 11-month-old infant—crashed deep within the dense jungle. Tragically, both their mother and the pilot perished in the impact, leaving the children stranded and isolated in one of the world’s most challenging environments, facing immediate threats from wildlife, starvation, and the elements.

Their incredible jungle survival saga saw the eldest sibling, a resourceful 13-year-old, take on the monumental task of caring for her younger brothers and sister. Relying on ancestral Indigenous wisdom passed down through generations and an indomitable will to live, the children navigated the treacherous terrain, foraging for food and water while evading the many dangers of the Colombian rainforest.

The search effort became a global phenomenon, with the Colombian military launching a massive operation. Crucially, their efforts were augmented by the invaluable expertise of Indigenous trackers, who possessed an intimate understanding of the jungle’s secrets and traditional survival techniques. This powerful collaboration proved instrumental in their eventual rescue, highlighting the importance of collective action.

Filmmakers Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, renowned for their compelling narratives of human endurance, bring this remarkable true story to the screen. Vasarhelyi articulated the film’s essence, stating, “Our work has always been about the raw power of the human spirit—its ability to rise, unite and overcome. LOST IN THE JUNGLE is that spirit in its purest form.”

Chin added his perspective on the production, highlighting how the team, alongside Colombian filmmaker Juan Camilo Cruz, meticulously recreated the survival and rescue details. “Working with Juan and the amazing team in Colombia allowed us to really showcase incredible details about the rescue and survival like never before. We hope audiences leave as inspired as we were by Lesly and the powerful partnership among the rescue teams.”

Juan Camilo Cruz, deeply proud to tell a story honoring Indigenous people and the wisdom rooted in their land, sees the Nat Geo documentary as more than just a survival tale. “LOST IN THE JUNGLE is a tribute to the extraordinary courage of four children—true heroes—and a reminder of the Colombian jungle’s true value, far beyond its resources. For me, their journey is a powerful example of what Colombia can be: When we set aside our differences and come together, we can achieve the impossible. That’s a message the world urgently needs to hear.”

The documentary is scheduled to make its world premiere at the prestigious Telluride Film Festival, building anticipation for its wider release. Following its festival debut, “Lost in the Jungle” will air on National Geographic on September 12, offering viewers a chance to witness this profound story, and will subsequently be available for streaming the very next day on Disney+.
