The United States Air Force is exploring an innovative strategy to accelerate the deployment of its LGM-35A Sentinel intercontinental ballistic missile program, potentially involving the construction of hundreds of new missile silos on private properties. This ambitious approach aims to circumvent the time-consuming and costly process of retrofitting existing facilities, ensuring the nation’s nuclear deterrence capabilities remain robust and modern.
Lt. Gen. Andrew Gebara, the Air Force’s deputy chief of staff for strategic deterrence and nuclear integration, recently articulated this shift during a Mitchell Institute forum. He emphasized that building entirely new silos is not only a viable option but could actually lead to significant savings in both time and financial resources, contradicting initial assumptions about such a large-scale infrastructure project.
Gebara clarified that while the majority of these new nuclear missile facilities are anticipated to be located on federal land, there might be instances requiring the acquisition of private property. He reassured that such purchases would be limited and strategically managed to facilitate the program’s accelerated timeline without undue burden for the US Air Force.
This strategic pivot is primarily driven by the need to avoid potential delays associated with converting the aging Minuteman III silos, which must remain fully operational and on alert until the Sentinel ICBM modernization is complete. The existing Minuteman III fleet has been the backbone of the land-based leg of the U.S. nuclear triad since the 1970s, making a seamless transition critical for defense strategy.
Further insights into the military modernization effort were shared by Maj. Gen Colin Connor, director of ICBM modernization, during a public town hall at Minot Air Force Base. He explained that transitioning to the Sentinel program would allow the Air Force to prolong the operational life of some Minuteman IIIs by salvaging spare parts from retired missiles, optimizing existing resources.
Katie Parks, the service’s deputy ICBM program executive officer, also highlighted that the construction of new silos provides an opportunity to address inherent shortcomings in some current facilities. A second test flight for the advanced B-21 Raider stealth bomber is expected by year-end, contingent on specific event milestones. Concurrently, the Air Force is nearing flight testing for a new radar system destined for its venerable B-52 bomber fleet at Edwards Air Force Base in California.
