Her show, “The Cutting Room Floor,” known for its candid discussions, inadvertently shone a harsh spotlight on the industry’s often-criticized wage practices.

Omondi’s now-infamous job post detailed a full-time, in-person position in New York City, combining the responsibilities of a bookings administrator, studio coordinator, and personal assistant, all for an annual salary of $55,000 with no benefits. This multifaceted role, coupled with a compensation package many deemed unlivable in an expensive metropolis like NYC, quickly drew intense scrutiny from the online community.

The immediate backlash highlighted a significant disparity between the listed salary and the reality of living costs and legal employment standards in New York. Commenters pointed out that $55,000 in 2025 falls below the poverty line for the city and well below the minimum salary required for overtime exemption, sparking outrage over what many perceived as an exploitative offer within the fashion industry.

Journalist Ira Madison III further fueled the discussion by meticulously documenting the job listing and Omondi’s subsequent apology. He critiqued her live response, where she suggested the role was suitable for “a young person” with low expenses, noting the problematic implications of such age-based assumptions and potential discrimination in employment practices.

Despite the widespread criticism, some voices emerged defending Omondi, arguing that the $55,000 salary, while low, was not uncommon for entry-level roles in the fashion and media sectors of NYC. Omondi herself attempted to justify the wage by sharing her own past experience of earning $30,000 after college, maintaining that it reflected industry norms rather than a deliberate attempt to underpay.

However, her defense failed to quell the controversy, with many critics decrying the perpetuation of an outdated “paying your dues” mentality. They argued that such underpaid roles are only accessible to individuals with a significant financial safety net, thus limiting access and diversity within the fashion industry to those from privileged backgrounds.

The situation escalated when, amidst the ongoing debate about the job, Omondi released a podcast episode featuring Gwyneth Paltrow, a move many listeners found ironically fitting given Paltrow’s public persona and wealth. This timing intensified the social media backlash, adding another layer to the public’s perception of Omondi’s brand and judgment.

Ultimately, Omondi chose to halt the hiring process, issuing a subscriber-only apology on Patreon. While admitting “poor communication,” she also controversially stated that the job was not, in fact, three roles merged into one, despite her earlier descriptions. This explanation, coupled with the omission of any mention of zero benefits and the perceived lack of personal accountability, only served to deepen the public’s skepticism about her understanding of equitable employment practices.
