A fascinating glimpse into the past has recently been unveiled at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), as a 1990s time capsule, meticulously sealed by Princess Diana herself, was unearthed for the very first time in over three decades. This remarkable event offers a poignant connection to Royal History and a beloved figure, bringing back a flood of 1990s Nostalgia for many.

The Time Capsule, originally interred in 1991 during a ceremonial event led by the late Princess, was brought to light to facilitate vital construction work on the hospital’s new Children’s Cancer Centre. This necessitated the careful excavation of the historic container, revealing its secrets to a new generation and those who fondly remember the era.

Among the treasures discovered within were a collection of truly nostalgic Memorabilia. Finds included a compact pocket television, a solar-powered calculator, a European passport, a bottle filled with tree seeds, an intricate snowflake hologram, and notably, a Kylie Minogue CD. Each item serves as a unique relic, reflecting the technological advancements and cultural trends prevalent in the early 90s.

Princess Diana, who assumed the prestigious role of president of GOSH in 1989, personally placed the capsule beneath the main entrance of the hospital. This significant act occurred when she laid the foundation stone for what would become the Variety Club Building, further cementing her profound connection to the institution. She later returned in 1994 to officially inaugurate the completed facility.

This tradition of sealing foundational capsules at Great Ormond Street Hospital echoes a much older ceremony dating back to 1872. During that earlier event, Princess Alexandra, then the Princess of Wales, laid the foundation stone for the hospital’s original building and, in a similar fashion, sealed her own capsule. Intriguingly, that particular historical capsule has yet to be recovered, adding another layer of mystery to the hospital’s rich past.

To mark this momentous occasion, hospital staff who were either born in 1991 or were actively working at GOSH during Princess Diana’s visit were invited to participate in the unearthing ceremony earlier this year. Their presence underscored the continuity of care and the enduring legacy of Diana’s involvement with the hospital, bridging past and present generations.

One staff member, reflecting on the contents, shared a personal anecdote: “It brought back so many memories seeing the pocket TV in there – I had bought one for my husband back in the day, for when he had a break whilst driving his coach around the country. They were very expensive then!” Such individual recollections highlight the deep personal resonance these items hold, extending beyond mere objects to evoke a powerful sense of 1990s Nostalgia.

The opening of this Time Capsule not only celebrated a significant moment in Royal History but also served as a reminder of the enduring impact of individuals like Princess Diana on charitable institutions. It offered a tangible connection to the past, reminding us of a different era while looking forward to the future of paediatric care at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
