These products, often featuring design flaws that could lead to tragic outcomes, have prompted consumer watchdogs to issue urgent warnings to parents and caregivers.
A recurring and particularly hazardous characteristic identified in many of these questionable items is the presence of hoods. Such design elements pose a direct suffocation risk, as they can easily cover a baby’s head and face while the infant moves during sleep, obstructing breathing and creating an unsafe sleep environment.
Adding to the gravity of the situation, consumer groups have discovered that online platforms have facilitated the sale of baby sleeping bags strikingly similar or even identical to products previously subjected to official recall by regulatory bodies like the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) due to known suffocation risks. This suggests a significant loophole in marketplace monitoring and enforcement.
Beyond hoods, the investigation uncovered other critical safety omissions. For instance, some sleeping bags, including a teddy bear-style blanket observed on a prominent marketplace, lacked essential armholes. These openings are crucial for preventing babies from slipping down inside the bag, which can lead to entrapment or further increase the risk of suffocation, highlighting a clear failure to meet fundamental safety standards.
Specific examples of concerning listings were identified on various online marketplaces. One particular sack-style sleeping bag on an auction site showed a baby “positively swamped” by the oversized item, emphasizing how ill-fitting products can compromise safety. Furthermore, several listings on another major platform were flagged with serious concerns, some appearing to be exact replicas of recalled products, while others shared similar dangerous designs.
In light of these findings, Which? is strongly advising consumers to exercise extreme caution and meticulously avoid baby sleeping bags that incorporate hoods, excessive material, or novelty additions such as large bows. These features are not only unnecessary but actively increase the danger by potentially covering an infant’s head and face as they naturally shift positions during the night. The emphasis remains on using sleeping bags with proper armholes to ensure a secure fit and prevent slipping.
The issue extends to multipurpose items marketed as combined swaddles, stroller covers, or cocoons, alongside being sleeping bags. Experts recommend avoiding such versatile products unless each individual function demonstrably conforms to rigorous safety standards, as compromises in one area can undermine overall baby safety. The continued presence of these products, despite market surveillance efforts earlier in the year by the OPSS, underscores the persistent challenge of online product safety.
