A Florida homeowner experienced a terrifying ordeal when he was suddenly attacked by a bear on his front porch, an incident partially captured by his doorbell camera. This shocking Florida bear attack, which left Alexander Rojas with significant injuries, has prompted an investigation by state wildlife officials and raised concerns about human-wildlife conflict in residential areas.

The harrowing event unfolded around 4:00 AM on August 15th, as Rojas was preparing to leave his Apopka incident home. He initially spotted what appeared to be two juvenile bears in his yard and attempted to scare them away. However, one of the bears unexpectedly turned and charged towards him, leading to a direct confrontation on his doorstep, moments before his doorbell camera footage cut out.

Recounting the terrifying moments, Rojas described how the bear bit his arm and clawed at his rib cage. In a desperate act of self-defense, he managed to kick the animal’s feet out and strike it in the nose, creating an opportunity to escape. Severely injured, Rojas fled down the street, calling his girlfriend for help as he was bleeding profusely.

Following the attack, Rojas was rushed to the emergency room, where he received crucial medical attention, including tetanus and rabies shots. The severity of his injuries required further specialist care, particularly for his hand, where he has experienced reduced function between two fingers. Lacking health insurance, the medical bills have become a significant financial burden, leading him to establish a GoFundMe page to seek public assistance.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has confirmed they are actively investigating what they termed a “human-bear incident.” Officials informed Rojas that their plan involves trapping the aggressive bear and relocating it to a different area, a standard protocol in such cases to ensure public safety and implement effective wildlife management strategies.

Despite the FWC’s efforts to trap the animal, Rojas remains deeply shaken by the encounter. He has temporarily relocated to an RV at his parents’ home in Sanford, expressing a profound reluctance to return to his Apopka residence. His decision underscores the psychological impact of such a violent wildlife encounter and his concern for his family’s safety.

This incident near Wekiva Springs highlights the increasing frequency of bear sightings and encounters in Florida’s rapidly expanding residential zones. As human development encroaches on natural habitats, understanding and implementing effective wildlife management strategies, alongside public awareness about coexistence, become paramount to minimizing future conflicts and preventing further human-wildlife conflict scenarios.
